to I toI- 5^ ^ HYDROPSALIS.—NYCTIDEOMUS. 3(;3 primaiy-quills spotted with rufous on both webs, the fouith barredwith white; middle tail-feathers heavily marked with grey, themaikinos on the outer feathers much narrower and inclining toruCous ; tliroat and sides of face buffy-white with dark bars to thefeathers; remainder of the under surface brown barred withwhite or buffy-white, the white increasing in extent on theabdomen and under tail-coverts. Total length 240 mm., culmen 10, wing 15,5, tail IBJ:, tarsus 11. The male described was collected at Bartica. Adult female. Differs from the adult male in being smaller anddarker, with scarcely any wdiite in the plumage. The white baron the primary-quills in the male is represented by rufous spotsin the female. The white on the outer tail-feathers in the male isentirelv absent in the tail of the female. Wing 148 mm. The description of the female is taken from an example in theBritish Museum collected by Whitely at Karaakusa on the 10th of
