elon-gated apex terminating in short awl-shaped styles with minute simple stigmas; nectariferousscales truncate, slightly emarginate, one of which is placed at the base of each carpel. 102 UMBILICUS SEMPERVIVUM. This very scarce and interesting plant is a native of Eastern Caucasus, where it is found in mountainous and stony places. It is in the collection ofthe Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society, in whose garden it wasraised from Russian seeds received in 1837, through the late Mr. Hunneman. It should be grown in pots filled with loam and sand, using plenty of drainersin the bottoms of the pots. Although it may probably be capable of enduringthe severity of our winters, it is likely to be rotted off by damp, on account ofits succulent leaves ; for which reason it ought to have the protection of the coldframe in winter, and be kept rather dry.—It may be increased by offsets. Fig. 1, calyx; 2, gamopetalous corolla laid open ; 3, the 5 carpels, withtheir hypogynous scales.
