n erosion from an eversion of the cervix thetwo lips of the cervix are grasped by the vulsella forceps andthe lacerated edges approximated. If the red surface disappearsan eversion is diagnosed; if there still remains a red zone aboutthe external os an erosion must be present. In removing sections from the cervix for diagnostic purposes thecervix is grasped by the vulsella forceps. Forcible traction upon the cervix is not without danger. It ispossible to rupture the peritoneum and to tear through adhesions.Acute inflammatory lesions of the pelvis are absolute contraindi-cations to the use of the vulsella forceps lest the inflammationbe excited to further extension. In the pregnant uterus severehemorrhage may be brought on by the application of the forceps. In removing the vulsella forceps care is to be exercised for fear ofinjuring the cervix or wounding the patient. Superficial suturesof catgut or a vaginal pack with iodoform gauze may be placed if hemorrhage is severe. (82) PLATE X.

Palpation of the Pedicle of an Ovarian Cyst. Two fingers are inserted into the rectum and the opposite hand over the abdomen. Anassistant makes traction upon the cervix with a vulsella forceps while a third assistantgrasps the cyst with both hands and draws it upward. In this manner the pedicle is putupon the stretch and can be engaged between the fingers in the rectum and those on theabdomen. CHAPTEE X. UTERINE DILATORS. For the purpose of exploring the uterine cavity with the fingerand curette the cervix must be dilated. Hegars or Kelleys dilatorsare recommended for general use. By them the cervix is sym-metrically dilated, with a minimum amount of trauma. The vaginal speculum should always be used to expose thecervix. The anterior lip of the cervix is grasped by a vulsellumforceps. The dilators are sterilized by boiling, and lubricatedwith sterilized glycerin or boroglycerin.
