Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra - UNSO
 
The first national cultural institution, the Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra - UNSO, was established by a well-known composer, conductor and public figure, István Hegyi, on the basis of Kyiv Festival Orchestra, (was founded in 1989) and with the participation of the State Cultural and Educational Center "Ukrainian Hause", immediately after the proclamation (restoration) of independence of Ukraine, August 24, 1991. The co-founders of the orchestra were: Association of Business Cooperation "Ukrainian International Cultural Center" and the Ukrainian Arts Centre. With the active support of the State Television and Radio of Ukraine, the "Ukrainian House" Center, as well as with the participation of leading music groups and soloists of Ukraine, the orchestra managed to bring to the public unknown, banned or forgotten works by Mykola Lysenko, Fedir Yakуmenko, Myroslav Skoryk and Levko Kolodub. The Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra successfully held a number of national and international events, festivals and tours, participated, in particular: in events dedicated to the "Holodomor" of 1932-1933, in a gala concert dedicated to the 180th anniversary of Taras Shevchenko, in the evenings in memory of Stefan Turchak (1990,1993), performances of the world-famous troupe "Tokyo Ballet" in Kiev (1992), concerts dedicated to the Day of Kiev and the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Ukraine from Nazi invaders, Gala concerts of the winners of the program " New Names "of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (1992), the First Festival of Swiss Art in Ukraine (1991), the Days of France in Ukraine (1993), toured in Hungary (Budapest, 1991-1992), Poland (Zelena Gura - 1992), Germany (Berlin -1992), Lviv, Uzhhorod (1992), Chernihiv (1993); also participated in the International Festivals "Europa Cantat" (Veszprém, Hungary, 1992 - 1993) and "Panatene Pompiane" (Capri, Italy - 1992). The Ukrainian National Symphony Orchestra was conducted by Pawlo Dlaboga, Lucas Reinitzer (Switzerland), Gábor Hollerung, István Zámbó (Hungary), Czeslaw Grabowsky (Poland), Masahiko Kurano (Japan), Orest Kovaliv (Canada), Aram Garabekian (USA). World-famous soloists which took part in the UNSO concerts: Alexandrina Milcheva, Kaludi Kaludov (Bulgaria), Bogodar Kotorovich, Oleksiy Gorokhov, Anatoliy Bazhenov, Olga Rivnyak, Victoria Lukyanets, Oleksandr Teliga, Larysa Deordieva, Mykhailo Didyk, Stepan Fitsych, Mykola Shopsha, Alexander Katsiyayev (Ukraine). Despite the fierce pressure of some high-ranking government officials in the early 90's against the emergence and functioning of UNSO, the legendary team was destined to become a guide in the process of Ukrainian national cultural awakening!
