Dantes name occurs in a documentof 8 June, 1302, among the exiled Bianchi who at SanGodenzo in the Apennines were forming an alliancewith the Ubaldini to make war upon the FlorentineRepublic; but, in a similar agreement signed atBologna on 18 June, 1303, he no longer appearsamong them. Between these two dates he had madehis resolution to form a party by himself (Par., xvii,61-68), and had sought refuge in the hospitality ofBartolommeo della Scala, the lord of Verona, wherehe first saw Can Grande della Scala, Bartolommeosyounger brother, then a boy of fourteen years, whobecame the hero of his later days. His literary-work at this epoch centres round his rime, or lyricalpoems, more particularly round a series of fourteencanzoni or odes, amatory in form, but partly allegori-cal and didactic in meaning, a splendid group of poemswhich connect the Vita Nuova with the DivinaCommedia Early in 1304 he seems to have goneto Bologna. Here he began, but left unfinished, aLatin treatise, De Vulgari Eloquentia, in which heattempts to discover the ideal Italian language, thenoblest form of the vernacular, and then to show howit should be employed in the composition of lyricalpoetry.
