Заснована у 1796 році на основі пожертви у розмірі 5000 доларів США від англо-американського вченого, винахідника, державного та громадського діяча Бенджаміна Томпсона, більш відомого як [[Бенджамін Румфорд|граф Румфорд]] (він і став першим лауреатом нагороди). Супроводжується грошовою премією у розмірі 1000 фунтів стерлінгів. Кандидати на отримання медалі відбираються Радою Королівського товариства ({{lang-en|Council of the Royal Society}}) за рекомендацією Комітету по нагородах за фізичні науки ({{lang-en|Physical Sciences Awards Committee}}).
