Immunity — четвертий студійний альбом англійського музиканта та продюсера Джона Гопкінс. Реліз альбому відбувся 4 червня 2013 на лейблі Domino. У тому ж році альбом був номінований на щорічну музичну премію Mercury Prize, що присуджується за кращий альбом Великобританії та Ірландії.[1]

В підтримку альбому було випущено два сингли:«Breathe This Air» та «We Disappear».

Гопкінс почав роботу над альбомом

Майже весь матеріал альбому був записаний на студії в історичному районі Гекні в північно-східній частині Лондона. Деякі партії піаніно були записані в Сіднеї.

Із програмного забезпечення Джон використовував систему Logic Pro. Під час запису Гопкінс користувався програмою Parallels Desktop for Mac для запуску свого старого комп'ютера, за яким він звик працював останні 10 років. Також використовував програму Sound Forge версії 1999 року.

Живі інструментальні партії спочатку були записані в систему Logic та паралельно редагувалися в Sound Forge. I also have a Roland SH-09 and a Korg MS20, which is the newest one, and it’s all over the album.[3]

One of the first sounds on 'Immunity,' on the song 'We Disappear,' is a field recording of Jon's studio door opening and closing. It marks a new beginning for him. He spent the next nine months reinventing himself. He started using Logic and switched from a PC to a Mac.[4] I remember the original rhythm, I recorded it on my phone by tapping a pen on a table and that Dictaphone recording is actually still in the track.[We Disappear][5]

‘Abandon Window’ is a track that was actually written about the tsunami and earthquake in Japan (2011)[6] I live really near the Olympic Park and I’d just come back from the studio to write and heard these fireworks that sounded like they were miles away. I went up to the roof terrace and recorded them. They’re very distant and I didn’t want them to sound like fireworks because the inspiration on that track (‘Abandon Window’) is quite dark and sad. The track ‘Open Eye Signal’, when you hear that choir sound come in, that’s actually me singing but sped up and with huge reverb and overlayered harmonies.[6]

I also got a couple of vintage synths, I got a Korg MS-20, which is either late 70s or early 80s and that’s the central sound on ‘Open Eye Signal’. That’s the track I wrote first that really sent me and the record down the path it went.[6]

There’s also lots of me hitting things to make the drums rather than using samples. The percussion part on the track ‘Immunity’ is the sound that my piano pedals make when you press them – one of the pedals makes this really amazing creaking noise.[6]

I build each track layer by layer and I don’t do any extra mixing or get anyone else involved – apart from the last two minutes of ‘Open Eye Signal’. I worked with a guy called Rick Simpson on that who helped me mix it and get that extra punch because I wanted it to sound really refreshing a weird, almost like a little extra track at the end.[6]

I really didn’t sleep at all when I was writing that one ‘Collider’. I was booked to play at Bloc Festival and I’d made a vow to myself to get that track finished and ready to play on that day so I worked my arse off for the whole of the ten days leading up to it.[6] The track from the new album, Collider, I remember starting it last June and finishing it in December.[7]

Autogenic training can focus your thoughts ‘til there aren’t any and meditation can do that, an insane night out can do that, a drug experience can do that or sex can do that. It’s a sort of goal of the human mind to manage to switch itself off completely and I think music can do that as well. So, for me it was really just a case of trying to incorporate the hypnotic techniques that I’d gathered along the way into the music. There’s one autogenic recording which had a voice floating around really slowly from left to right at 60bpm, so I incorporated that idea into ‘Sun Harmonics’.[6]

About 'Sun Harmonics,' an elated and uplifting dance track that includes a field recording of the London streets made the night he finished the album[4]


The title track, "Immunity," existed in an earlier form, but I kind of completely changed it.[8]

We originally had the idea of trying to spell the word “immunity” with items ... or grow some life forms and spell that word. There’s a guy who specializes in that very creative type of typography (Craig Ward). He put us in touch with a biochemist called Linden Gledhill whose speciality is growing crystals and photographing them. His job is testing drugs and antibodies ... to help find cures for things, but in his spare time he photographs these incredible microscopic worlds. As soon as I saw what he was creating just by photographing food dyes though different lenses, it was incredible. It just fit with the album.
