Арієві (Ariidae) — родина костистих риб Сомоподібні (Siluriformes).

Опис ред.

Представники родини — одні з небагатьох сомів, що покинули прісні води. Це звичайно великі або середньої величини риби; спинний плавець у них короткий і високий, жировий — маленький. У прибережних водах тропічних морів арієві — об'єкти невеликого промислу. Спинний і грудний плавці у арієвих сомів озброєні гострими зазубреними шипами. Укол цих шипів надзвичайно небезпечний, ранка потім опухає і запалюється. Тому жителі Гвіани, якщо піймали на гачок арієві соми, насамперед обламують у них ці колючки.

Спосіб життя ред.

Як і у більшості інших сомів, арієвим властива турбота про потомство. Багато відкладають ікру у гнізда-ямки. Самці галеїхта (Galeichthys felis) виношують ікру, що розвивається у ротовій порожнині. Деякі види з цієї родини вдруге повернулися у прісні води й русла рік Австралії та Мадагаскару. Деякі арієві (Galeichthys felis, Bagre marinus) можуть видавати досить голосні звуки. Звуковий апарат у цьому випадку — замикаючий механізм колючок спинного й грудного плавців, особливим чином влаштований. Посилені резонансом стінок плавального міхура, ці звуки нагадують різкий скрип (частота коливань 2-4000 у секунду). Припускають, що звуки ці служать орієнтиром при утворенні зграй у нічний час. Прісноводний вид Potamirus izabalensis, що мешкає у Центральній Америці, також виношує ікру у роті, видає звуки, схожі на крякання і бурчання .
